JANUARY 16, 2010: HAITI RELIEF / MESSAGE FROM OWEN THOMAS...
1.16.10, 1:55am.
Hello, friends.
Since 2004, THE ELMS have maintained a close personal relationship with Luke Renner, an extremely talented filmmaker from our home state of Indiana. Luke has now directed and edited three music videos for our band, as well as a live concert film and documentary that was released in 2005. He is one of my closest friends.
As long as I've known Luke, he's had an enormous personal burden: to tell the story of the people of Haiti - who are among the world's most impoverished - and to appeal to people like you and I to become actively involved in the lives of people who are living in destitution. For years, Luke has made frequent trips to Haiti to educate, film, serve and assist, primarily in the towns of Cap Haitien and Cite Soleil, in which the majority of the 300,000 residents live in abject poverty, and where murder, rape, and kidnappings are frequent occurrences.
In June 2009, Luke and his family (wife Adrian, and three children Samuel, Emma, and Samara) relocated to Cap Haitien, Haiti, to found and operate the Caribbean Institute of Media Technologies (CIMT). The goal of this endeavor is to educate native Haitians to tell their own personal stories via modern media, thus allowing us all to see, firsthand, the dire need for compassionate intervention from the world outside. I am proud beyond words of Luke's family.
Almost two years ago, I sent Luke a demo of a new song I'd been working on called "This Is How The World Will End." He called me immediately to say that the song had affected him deeply, and he asked permission to create a video for the song using images he'd culled on a recent trip to Haiti. I agreed, and within a week Luke sent me the completed video. Upon seeing the footage, my heart was broken for the subjects in the film, and Luke had succeeded in imbuing the plight of Haitians into my consciousness as well. "...World Will End" has become one of THE ELMS' most purposed songs, and it has subsequently been released on our latest album as of September 2009.
THE ELMS are a band with deep belief in destiny, and the decision to show this video at this time, following a crisis like the Haitian earthquake of January 12, 2010, was one that has been carefully considered for the last 72 hours. We desire only for the images in this video to offer you a direct look at the people of Haiti as our friend Luke has gotten to know them - they are beautiful, precious people, who we have a human responsibility to always - but now more than ever. Please watch the film, take these people into your heart, and give to them of your resources as soon as possible. (We have worked with Luke to list organizations below who are hands-on, as we speak, with relief efforts in Haiti. You can trust that they are reputable and sincere in their efforts.)
For the foreseeable future, THE ELMS will be donating all proceeds from the digital sales of the song "This Is How The World Will End" to Haitian earthquake relief efforts through CARE International. A track purchased equals direct support. Our band will derive ZERO personal revenue from the perpetuation and sales of "This Is How The World Will End." The track is available through all digital retailers.
This song is our offering, the best we can do, to help our brothers and sisters in Haiti during their darkest hour. And to our friend Luke (who as I write this is walking the streets of Port Au Prince doing all he can to serve), we love you and will see you soon. If "This Is How The World Will End" was written solely for this moment in time, let it be so.
For Haiti, for each other...
Owen Thomas

Early press reports show an unbelievably enthusiastic reception to the new music, with subsequent press commentary including the following words about the new music:
"...Each track boasted a melody to rival the work of Tom Petty, grit suggestive of the Rolling Stones and hardscrabble storytelling reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen." -Indianapolis Star
"Balancing just the right amount of righteousness with anthemic energy, it has potential to be a stadium stopper when (it shouldn’t be if) The Elms reach those heights." -Nuvo Newsweekly
